Omodos Village

Omodos Village is located about 8 km from Pano Platres Village and about 42 km from the city of Limassol, within the Limassol district of Cyprus.

This popular tourist destination has existed since the Byzantine era.  Omodos Village is considered one of the main wine producing villages in Cyprus, which has been well-known for its wine since ancient times.

This village features several sites to explore, including the Timiou Stavrou Monastery (which will be featured in an upcoming blog post), the Omodos Wine Press, and Socrates Traditional House, as well as plenty of cafes, wineries and souvenir shops.

The Omodos Wine Press (also known as the Omodhos Wine Press and the Linos Wine Press) features one of the oldest surviving wine presses from medieval times.  This wine press provides an example of the traditional wine-making method in Cyprus.  When it was acquired by the Department of Antiquities, the wine press was declared an ancient monument, and it was restored during the 1980s.

According to a sign near the Omodos Wine Press, "The function of the wine press is based on a second order lever system: it consists of an enormous double wooden beam one end of which is inserted into the wall behind the platform.  The other end of the beam has a pulley through which runs a vertical wooden screw with a heavy stone weight fixed on its lower end.  The grapes are spread over the platform and covered with three layers of crossing planks of different sizes, the uppermost of which is in touch with the beam.  While two or three persons rotate the screw, the heavy stone is raised and with its weight causes the gradual lowering of the beam and consequently the pressing of the grapes.  As the rotation continues, the stone remains raised and more pressure is exerted on the grapes until the final extraction of the grape juice which runs through a hole into an earthenware jar half-buried in the floor.  The juice is transferred into larger jars for fermentation which lasts for a few months.  The wine is then ready for consumption."

The Socrates Traditional House is a two-level house on display that provides an example of the traditional Cypriot house and lifestyle.

Omodos Village is a lovely village to explore for both locals and tourists.
