Panagia Valana Church

Panagia Valana Church is situated on the hillside near Laneia Village, which is located in the foothills of the Troodos Mountains, within the Limassol district of Cyprus.

Panagia Valana Church is actually two churches: the older church of Panagia Valana and the modern church of Panagia Valana.  In 1996, an earthquake caused severe damage to the older chapel, so the new church was built.  In 2011, there was still construction at this site.

The Icon of Saint Mary of Valanas (also known as Panagia tou Valana and the Madonna of Valana) is on display within the older church of Panagia Valana.  This Icon of Saint Mary of Valanas is considered to be one of the oldest paintings in the world.  It was transferred from the ruins of an ancient monastery that was built nearby, yet the monastery was destroyed during the Ottoman rule.

From the hillside near the churches, there's a lovely view of Laneia Village, which is featured in the recent Laneia Village blog post.

Even though it's a major drive up this hillside, the two Panagia Valana Churches are worth visiting, particularly the older chapel with the Saint Mary of Valanas painting.
