Holy Cross Chapel and Balkan War Memorial

The Holy Cross Chapel (also known as the Holy Cross Church) and Balkan War Memorial (also known as the Balkan Wars Memorial) are located on the Fidkias Hill, which overlooks Pedoulas Village, within the Nicosia district of Cyprus.

The Holy Cross Chapel was built in 1986, and there's a massive cross situated next to the church.

This cross is 25 meters in height, and it's visible from Pedoulas Village and most of the surrounding area, due to the size of the cross and the hilltop location.

The Balkan War Memorial is also located on same hill as the Holy Cross Chapel.  This memorial monument was built in 2010 to commemorate the Cypriots that served in the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913, particularly those killed while defending Greece.

According to a sign at the site, "During the Balkan Wars, as in all the wars of Greece since the Greek Revolution of 1821, the Greek Cypriots were present en masse, despite British obstacles and stringent legal prohibitions.  According to a moderate estimate, Cypriot volunteers in the Balkan Wars numbered approximately 1500-1800, the majority being farmers, mostly from the Limassol District.  There was also a notable presence of Athens University students, members of the clergy, as well as teachers.  Moreover, generous financial contributions of thousands of pounds were sent to Athens under the guise of 'national needs' following a fundraising campaign in Cyprus.  A great deal of Cypriot blood was spilled in Epirus and Macedonia with 55 Cypriots killed in the Balkan Wars.  Then fell during the siege of Bizani, while most lost their lives in the fatal Greek-Bulgarian war."

From the hillside next to the Holy Cross Chapel and the Balkan War Memorial, there's a lovely panoramic view of the Troodos Mountains and surrounding area.  After visiting Pedoulas Village, this is a worthwhile site to visit, particularly since the massive cross is visible throughout this region.
